Backstory: Mel is the kid sister of Jake Riley, growing up with him in New York, rather happy that she didn't get her brothers temper. She is however able to help to relax him. She also knows Jake's friends Alex and Jana as Alex had been to the house many times throughout the years of her and Jake being kids, and Jana used to actually babysit her from time to time. Becka Smith was actually her next door neighbor, and the two were pretty close as kids. The two had become the best of friends, even doing that blood binding that was a big deal at the time.

Into High School the two were in every class together, spent lunch together and even began experimenting with one another when they started into College. During Containment, Becka and Mel were actually outside the quarantine zone, but when Mel learned that her brother had gone in, she tried to do everything in her power to get in there with him but to no avail. After Jake was transferred out of New York, Mel didn't keep as in touch with him, but not because she stopped caring, simply because the distance tended to make things a bit more difficult, when he was in New York, she knew both their schedules.

Following the outbreak, Becka and Mel had a few close calls, before deciding they had to get out of New York, and had decided to go to Georgia, where Jake was transferred, to see if they could locate him. Failure in finding him there put the girls on the road together to search him out as Mel refused to believe that Jake was dead.
